Case Study - Block G, Sandyford

Architect: H.J. Lyons & Partners
Quantity Surveyor: Bruce Shaw Partnership
Main Contractor: G & T Crampton

Block G, a seven storey office development in Central Park development, it is an example of the flexibility provided by the Williaam Cox Kestraal range's capacity to manage different facade elements such as Curtain Walling and rainscreen.

  • Fully bonded - The glass is structurally bonded to the Kestraal unitised frame in the factory.
  • Bonded/capped - Emphasise either the horizontal or the vertical ideation of the unitised units.
  • Fully capped - All four sides of the glass are fully capped.

As units are factory manufactured and prepped, the rate of site installation was dramatically increased, giving the client a fully weathered building in an appreciably short time than using traditional curtain walling systems. A typical average would be 3 to 4 times faster than traditional stick site installation. The curved North facade of the building demonstrated the system's capacity to create clear unobstructed glass to glass joints. This was achieved using the full structurally bonded capability of our Dow Corning bonding station.

The high performance glass is fully bonded on all four sides to the unitised frame. The spandrel area of the unit fritted rather than introducing transoms we were able to achieve the unique appearance. The East elevation of the building consisted of a fully capped version of the Kestraal 65 with Williaam Cox designed bespoke vertical Brise soleil fitted. The unusual effect was created with colour and rotation of the blades.
